Agency of the Year

Twenty-six years ago Turning Point Inc. offered domestic violence victims a 14-bed shelter and 24-hour crisis line. Since then we have greatly expanded our services. Currently we have a 41-bed emergency shelter and we extended the scope of our service provision to include outreach programs for non-residential victims of domestic and sexual violence. We have comprehensive support services that provide group and individual therapy, a Youth and Family Program (YFP) specializing in providing therapy and crisis intervention services to youth, as well as, addressing the effects of domestic and sexual violence on family dynamics, 24-hour advocacy services through the medical system, criminal justice for sexual assault victims, and a Personal Protection Order office that provides front-line screening and safety planning for people in immediate and eminent danger. Turning Point opened the first Forensic Nurse Examiners Program in Southeastern Michigan in 1999, which provides forensic medical exams and crisis intervention services to adult and child victims of sexual assault 24/7. We provide community education and prevention education workshops in Macomb County high schools and middle schools. For the last 20 year Turning Point has operated an income generating second hand store, Second Hand Rose.

Barbara Dorrington

Trauma & Loss Consultant Supervisor of the Year

On this 30-year anniversary of Barb Dorrington’s social work and counseling career, she is very excited to receive the trauma and loss consultant supervisor award. Barb’s qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in social work and a Master’s degree in education. She has worked in a number of settings and in various capacities including a protection agency, a children’s treatment centre (Vanier) and for the last 18 years as a system social worker for the London District Catholic School Board in London Ontario. In her private practice, Barb specializes in bereavement, and trauma and loss in children and adults. As a registered art therapist for the last 25 years, Barb has long been keenly interested in the connection between art therapy and trauma. Barb has published chapters in two different art therapy books called the Hand in Hand series, and more recently she has published several newspaper articles on hurricane related activities. Her journals from her last five trips to Louisiana and Mississippi after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have been featured in the Trauma and Loss: Research and Interventions journals of the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children over these last two years. Barb credits her keen interest in trauma work specifically with large-scale disasters as being ignited when Bill Steele first asked for trained volunteers to help out after the hurricanes and Barb, along with another art therapist, Barb Desjardins, made the first of many trips south to offer support. Currently she is excited about teaching in the first TLC trauma training being offered in London, Ontario this spring.

She has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Preschool through Grade Eight Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology. Her experience includes positions such as Director of Early Childhood for a major University, Master Teacher and Director of Schools. In addition she is an Adjunct professor at a local Community College and has additional experience as an Early Childhood Specialist and in Special Education. Megan Gilliland

Trauma & Loss School Specialist of the Year

Megan Gilliland is a LISW who has worked in the field of social work for over 10 years. She graduated from Miami University with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology with a minor in Social Work and after working in residential treatment, pursued her Masters of Social Work from the University of Cincinnati. Megan is employed by Beavercreek City Schools near Dayton, Ohio as the district Prevention/Intervention Coordinator. She facilitates all safe and drug free schools programming for the school district, including crisis response and intervention. After attending TLC training last year, Megan has actively worked to provide training for district administrators, counselors, psychologists and nurses so they may effectively respond to student needs regarding trauma and loss. TLC training provided not only the science and biology to understand what many of us knew – that trauma and loss affects our students’ ability to learn – yet gave us effective tools for intervening with these students so they can be successful in the school setting. In addition to her work, Megan is a certified foster parent and enjoys coaching and playing golf, as well as traveling.

Theresa Fraser

Trauma & Loss Clinical Specialist of the Year

Theresa has worked in the Mental Health Field for the last 25 years and currently utilizes the play therapy process with children, teens and families at a Canadian Agency known as Branching Out. Though this agency is only four years old they are already earning a reputation for providing trauma services that make a difference in the lives of those they serve. Both Carpe Diem (the sister program) and Branching Out have registered additional staff for TLC training since Theresa began to spread the word.

Theresa teaches part time in the Child and Youth Worker program at Humber College. She and her husband Kevin have fostered over 200 children/adolescents and currently have a family of six boys aged 19- 6 years of age. She believes that we all need a “prescription to play” especially in the Sandtray. She earned her Clinical Specialist TLC certification at the 2007 Assembly and states that this training has provided insight and helpful tools in her role as a Therapist, Treatment Foster Parent and Professor.

She is a presenter this year but will return next year for her Consultant Level training. She is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. She is also Captain of her agency’s winning DRAGON BOAT TEAM!
