  • Ten sessions of sensory based activities to help children find ways to communicate their thoughts, worries, emotions about mom or dad being sent away.
  • Fear, Anger, Worry, Nightmares, About Me, Saying Goodbye, Where are My Parents?, What it Means to be a Citizen, Friendship, My Helping Hand and Celebration of Freedom are some of the activities.
  • Children learn about the country where their parent has been deployed, it’s people and culture.
  • They learn what it means to be proud to be an American.
  • They learn how to deal with what they can’t avoid thinking about.
  • Family activities are used to help the parents at home be less worried about how their child is managing as well as to give the parents an opportunity to express themselves to their children in ways designed to strengthen the bond between them.
  • Alternative activities are provided so the group could continue beyond its ten session format to help children during a long war or absence of parent on active duty.
  • Materials and guidelines regarding the schools administrative response - letters to parents, to staff, issues to consider, etc.
  • Letters for parents, handout materials are also provided.
  • Objectives for each session are clearly stated, materials needed are identified, and activity directions are easy to follow.
  • As a program supported by The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children, consultation is available by phone as needed.
