respond to their senses. They trust what they sense to be right, not
what is communicated at a cognitive level. Younger children do not
respond to cognitive reassurance, "It's okay. You're safe." Younger
children only feel safe at a sensory level.
Helping Children Feel Safe gives
the debriefer a series of sensory activities to help reestablish a sense of safety
for children in the midst of trauma. The TLC Debriefing Handbook is
also included in this program. The booklet, What Parents Need to Know,
is included and is an excellent way to educate parents about trauma and what
they can do to help their child.
Also included in this program is the Brave Bart storybook.
Brave Bart is a kitty who had something bad, sad and scary happen to him. Helping
Hannah, a neighborhood cat, helps Bart overcome his fears and become a survivor.
Brave Bart normalized the many trauma-reactions children experience. It is an
excellent resource to use to talk to and comfort a traumatized child. It is also
very beneficial when used with the Brave Bart and Helping Hannah puppets also
included in this program. A
